Second Chance enrolled 28 African American students during the 2023-24 school year, marking a 55.6% increase from the year before, according to the Georgia Department of Education.

Out of 53 students enrolled at Second Chance in the 2023-24 school year, African American students represented 53%, making them the largest ethnic group at the school.

The school operates within Evans County School District, whose administrative office is based in Claxton.

During the 2023-24 school year, Claxton Elementary School had the highest African American enrollment in Evans County School District, with 287 students.

The Georgia Department of Education’s Fiscal Year 2025-3 report indicated that over 1.7 million students attended Georgia public schools. Elementary grades comprised about 806,891 students (46.5%), 393,308 students (22.7%) were in middle schools, and 536,379 students (30.9%) attended high schools.

Chronic absenteeism continues to challenge Georgia schools after the pandemic, with 20.7% of students missing at least 10% of school days in 2024. The Georgia Department of Education responded with a statewide effort that includes a real-time attendance dashboard, public awareness campaign, and extra support for districts with high need.

Lawmakers in Georgia passed new attendance legislation in 2025, prohibiting student expulsion solely due to absenteeism. The law also sets new reporting requirements and supports programs that allow alternative routes to earning diplomas.

By 2025, Georgia reported an average student-to-teacher ratio of 14:1, which is stronger than the national 15:1 average. The best ratios are in preschool, with 13:1, and the elementary and middle grades, each at 14:1, compared to 16:1 in high schools.
