Second Chance registered five American Indian or Alaska Native students for the 2024-25 school year, which marked a 400% increase from the prior year, reports from the Georgia Department of Education show.

The total student body at Second Chance reached 77 students in the 2024-25 school year. Among the enrolled students, 7% identified as American Indian or Alaska Native, making this group the second-smallest represented at the school.

Located in the Evans County School District, Second Chance operates with its central office in Claxton.

Out of the four schools comprising the Evans County School District, Second Chance held the highest number of American Indian or Alaska Native students in the 2024-25 school year—with five enrolled.

Georgia public schools enrolled more than 1.7 million students, according to the Georgia Department of Education’s Fiscal Year 2026-1 report. Enrollment figures show elementary schools had 787,206 students (45.9%), middle schools had 388,733 (22.7%), and high schools enrolled 539,092 (31.4%).

Post-pandemic, chronic absenteeism continues as a concern for Georgia schools, with 20.7% of students missing at least 10% of school days in 2024, as reported by the Georgia Department of Education. In response, the department introduced a statewide program featuring a real-time attendance dashboard, public outreach, and targeted help for districts with higher need to improve attendance rates.

Georgia lawmakers enacted legislation in 2025 to revise school attendance policies, prohibiting expulsion solely due to absenteeism. The updated law also enacts additional reporting measures and coordinates with initiatives supporting alternative diploma completion options.

By 2026, Georgia’s student-to-teacher ratio averaged close to 14:1, surpassing the nationwide average of 15:1.
