He was born on June 23, 1919, in Alma, Georgia. He joined the U.S. Army in March 1942. He became a second lieutenant. On September 2, 1944, he fought in Montrevel, France. His unit was under heavy attack. He led a patrol to disable enemy mortars. He crawled close under fire and was wounded. He continued forward alone. He killed five enemy soldiers and scattered the rest. He then disabled an armored vehicle. He was badly injured but returned to his men.
For his actions, he received the Medal of Honor in 1946. He was promoted to captain. He later served in the Korean War. After military service, he returned to Alma. He lived there until his death on January 22, 1985. He was buried at Rose Hill Cemetery in Alma.
