He was born on July 11, 1915, near Alma, Georgia. He went to public schools. He studied at colleges in Douglas, Cochran, Statesboro, and Atlanta. He received a law degree in 1966. He worked as a farmer and a teacher.
He served in the U.S. Army Air Forces from 1942 to 1946. He rose from private to captain. In 1947, he was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives. He served four terms. He left Congress in 1955 after losing renomination.
He worked for Georgia’s Motor Vehicle Division. He then did sales and public relations. Later, he became a state tax examiner. He coordinated federal programs for the Bacon County Board of Education. He also worked on highway safety for Mississippi.
He spent his later years in Alma. He died there on May 5, 1989. He is remembered for his service in government and education.
