Second Chance counts 1 American Indian or Alaska Native student in 2023-24

According to reports from the Georgia Department of Education, Second Chance had 1 American Indian or Alaska Native student enrolled for the 2023-24 school year, mirroring the figure from the prior year.

Altogether, Second Chance enrolled 53 students for 2023-24. Members of the American Indian or Alaska Native community made up only 2% of total enrollment, making them among the least represented ethnic groups at the school.

The school, based in the Evans County School District, is operated under a central office in Claxton.

Out of all four schools in Evans County School District, Claxton Elementary School enrolled the highest number of American Indian or Alaska Native students in 2023-24, serving 7 students.

Data from the National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) 2024 reading report for Georgia 4th graders shows public school enrollment was approximately 38% Black, 36% white, 17% Hispanic, 4% Asian, and 5% multiracial students.

Following the pandemic, chronic absenteeism has persisted with 20.7% of Georgia’s students missing 10% or more of school days in 2024, Georgia Department of Education figures show. To tackle this problem, GaDOE launched statewide measures such as a real-time attendance dashboard, outreach campaigns, and targeted assistance for districts with the highest needs.

In 2025, a new Georgia law updated attendance rules to prohibit expelling students merely for absenteeism. Fresh reporting requirements were added, along with alignment to alternative graduation programs for students facing challenges.

Georgia’s average student-to-teacher ratio is about 14:1 starting in 2025, beating the national average of 15:1. Ratios for preschool average 13:1, elementary and middle schools both show a 14:1 rate, and high schools report a 16:1 ratio statewide.
