DOUGLAS MAYOR’S YOUTH COUNCIL IS OFF TO A GREAT START

Nine of the community’s brightest youth leaders took their oath of office for the 2022-2023 Douglas Mayor’s Youth Council on Monday, August 22, 2022.  The new group of teen leaders has been busy this summer promoting the youth leadership program throughout our community and even as far as Arkansas!

During the summer months, Joana Mazariegos traveled to the city of Crossett, Arkansas and met their Mayor, Crystal Marshall. Joana shared her experiences with the youth council and some ideas to help Crossett begin their Mayor’s Youth Council. Members also set up a booth at the George Washington Carver Freshman Campus Open House to speak to other youth about the youth council and how to become involved in the community. On Saturday, August 13, 2022, orientation was held for the council at Central Square Gym. The council learned about their roles as a Jr. Council Member, the roles of each city department, team building, and planning for the year.

This year’s Mayor’s Youth Council consists of nine members from GWCF (9th Grade) Campus, Coffee High School, and Citizens Christian Academy. Members are: Jalene Debro (Jr. Mayor), Joana Mazariegos (Jr. Mayor Pro-Tem), Kiran Reddy (Jr. City Clerk), Brody Grantham (Jr. Commissioner), Jeremiah Bazell (Jr. Commissioner), Jameson Cummings (Jr. Commissioner), Jared Davis (Jr. Commissioner), Zynia Hunt (Jr. Commissioner), and Gabriel Jump (Jr. Commissioner).

The first meeting will be held on September 20, 2022, at 6PM at the Youth Center. For more information about the Mayor’s Youth Council, please contact Dinitra Williams at (912) 331-9398.
