Morehead State holds off Men’s Basketball 74-71

Kalil Thomas made 8 of 9 from the floor and 4 of 5 from long distance to score 21 points and lead Morehead State to a 74-71 win over Georgia Southern in men's basketball action Wednesday night in Hanner Fieldhouse.

Andrei Savrasov collected his third double-double of the season, matching a career-high with 22 points and totaling a career-best 12 rebounds. Jalen Finch finished with 15 points and two assists, and Tai Strickland scored 14. Kaden Archie posted 11 points, six rebounds and two steals.

Key Moments 
Georgia Southern (6-5) trailed by as many as 16 points in the second half and was down by 10 with 33 seconds to go. Finch hit a layup, and after Jake Wolfe went 1 for 2 from the free-throw line, Savrasov knocked down a 3-pointer. 

GS forced a turnover, and Finch hit a pair from the charity stripe that cut the lead to 72-68 with seven seconds left. Mark Freeman made two free throws to push the lead to six, and Tyren Moore made a 3-pointer from the corner for the final margin.

A Thomas triple capped a 16-2 run for Morehead State (6-5) that gave the visiting Eagles a 30-15 lead with 4:22 left in the first half.  Georgia Southern cut the margin to 42-35 with a 6-2 spurt, capped by a pair of Strickland free throws, early in the second period. Alex Gross scored five straight points, and Thomas hit a 3-pointer as Morehead State responded with an 8-2 run that pushed the advantage to 16 points.

Stats and Notes
- After consecutive games with 10 3-pointers, GS shot 4 for 26 from long distance. 
- Southern tallied single-digit turnovers for the fourth time this season, matching its season low with six.
- Morehead State held GS to 22 percent shooting from the field in the first period while cashing in on 13 of 23 attempts at the other end (57 percent).
