33edited

There were 17 life sentenced inmates incarcerated at Long Unit in Long County in the third quarter of 2023, according to the Georgia Department of Corrections.

Samuel Logan Parker and William Dalton Johnson were the oldest at approximately 67-years-old.

Shawn Anthony Clark, a roughly 37-year-old man, was the youngest man sentenced to serve life in prison.

Georgia imprisons a higher percentage of its population than any other democracy in the world, locking up 968 per 100,000 people.

State spends between $25,000 and $30,000 on average annually on incarcerated individuals.

Georgia’s crime rate increased in recent years, leading to higher incarceration numbers and more taxpayer money spent on prisoners. Accusations of mistreatment of inmates, riots, deadly assaults on inmates, attacks on correctional officers, and concerns about the poor physical condition of the facilities are a continual problem in Georgia.

Inmates are often transferred around the state of Georgia, which can create data irregularities.
