This week in Southeast Georgia history.

Melvin Blount was born April 10, 1948, in Toombs County.

Born on April 10, 1948, in Toombs County, Georgia, Melvin Blount grew up near Vidalia and attended Lyons High School. He played four sports and earned a football scholarship to Southern University. Drafted by the Pittsburgh Steelers in 1970, he spent 14 seasons in the NFL as a cornerback. He became a five-time Pro Bowler and was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1989. Known for his physical play, he influenced NFL rule changes. After football, he served as Director of Player Relations for the NFL. In 1983, he opened the Mel Blount Youth Home in Toombs County to support children in need. His later years included community work and family life.
