This week in Southeast Georgia history.

Born June 23, 1919, in Alma, Georgia

Born June 23, 1919, in Alma, Georgia, this U.S. Army officer enlisted in 1942. On September 2, 1944, in France, he led a solo attack on a German mortar unit. Despite a shattered leg, he killed or dispersed the enemy and forced an armored vehicle to retreat. His actions earned him the Medal of Honor in 1946. He reached the rank of captain and served again in the Korean War. After leaving the Army, he returned to Alma. He died on January 22, 1985, and is buried at Rose Hill Cemetery in his hometown.
