Born on October 3, 1929, in Alma, Georgia, this individual became a legal scholar and university leader. He grew up in Savannah, where his parents worked in public service. He graduated from Morehouse College and earned a law degree from Howard University. He joined Harvard University in the 1970s and helped design a national model for affirmative action in college admissions. He also helped found the W. E. B. Du Bois Institute. From 1977 to 1984, he led Fisk University, raising funds and defending its cultural assets. He later held government and nonprofit positions, including work in the U.S. Virgin Islands and at Communities in Schools. He died in 2015.
